What and when is Halloween?

Halloween is the day where children can dress up in costumes and go house to house (they go ”trick-or-treating”) to ask for sweets! Halloween has been celebrated in the United States of America every year since the 19^th century. Halloween is celebrated on 31^st October and is the day before All Saints’ Day – November 1^st.

Halloween activities in Maria Ana

Students of the Maria Ana Primary school were very excited to participate in the activities prepared for them. The school wanted the students’ full participation as well as hoped they would be very surprised! The week before Halloween, students prepared pumpkins and different displays for the school. Many had brought carved and painted pumpkins, handmade crafts (coffins, graveyards), and more! All of the students that brought a pumpkin or handmade craft engaged in the school’s contest: there were many crafts to choose from.

To ready the children for activities being held on Friday, 28^th October, songs and vocabulary were learned. The children enjoyed learning the song “Knock knock, Trick or treat” and are able to sing the song – just ask them! In the morning, the students from kindergarten – with their teachers – held a mini-theatre show for grades 1^st through 2^nd. Afterwards, there was a costume show – each class was able to show off their wonderful costumes! A couple of costumes that were the most amazing were an astronaut and Edward Scissorhands, but in all, everyone dressed wonderfully. There was also a sing-a-long to “Knock knock, Trick or Treat”; the students enjoyed both very much. This day there were many workshops as well: storytelling, spooky fruits - they made fruits looking like ghosts or pumpkins - Halloween crafts, and more. They also learned to create crafts using recyclable material, which is also part of their lessons. Plastic pumpkins were made using the ends of two bottles – they were made fantastically!

Towards the end of the day, it was time to announce the winners of the pumpkin carving and craft making contest. There were three winners from first place to third place for both kindergarten and primary grades. Despite there being only three winners from each grade, everyone did their best making their Halloween pumpkins and crafts!
